we assure our customers a quick and cost-effective solution primarily due to the
platforms that we have chosen to develop our products on. We work
predominantly on open source solutions thereby keeping the initial outlay low
allowing us to charge for a full range of services that other E-Commerce
companies cannot provide.
• Linux
Linux is a computer operating system and its
kernel. It is one of the most prominent examples of free software and of
open-source development: unlike proprietary operating systems such as Windows
and Mac OS, all of its underlying source code is available to the public and
anyone can freely use, modify, and redistribute it.
In the narrowest sense, the term Linux refers to the Linux kernel, but it is
commonly used to describe entire Unix-like operating systems (also known as
GNU/Linux) that are based on the Linux kernel combined with libraries and tools
from the GNU Project and other sources. Most broadly, a Linux distribution
bundles large quantities of application software with the core system, and
provides more user-friendly installation and upgrades.
Initially, Linux was primarily developed and used by individual enthusiasts.
Since then, Linux has gained the support of major corporations such as IBM, Sun
Microsystems, Hewlett-Packard, and Novell for use in servers and is gaining
popularity in the desktop market. Proponents and analysts attribute this success
to its vendor independence, low cost, security, and reliability.
• Apache

Apache HTTP Server is
a free software/open source HTTP web server for Unix-like systems (BSD, Linux,
and UNIX systems), Microsoft Windows, Novell Netware and other platforms.
Apache features highly configurable error messages, DBMS-based authentication
databases, and content negotiation. It is also supported by several graphical
user interfaces (GUIs) which permit easier, more intuitive configuration of the
server.
The Apache HTTP Server is developed and maintained by an open community of
developers under the auspices of the Apache Software Foundation.
Initially, Apache was
the only viable open source alternative to the Netscape web server (currently
known as Sun Java System Web Server). It has since evolved to rival other
Unix-based HTTP servers in terms of functionality and performance. Since April
1996 Apache has been the most popular HTTP server on the Internet: in May 1999
it was running on 57% of all web servers; by November 2005 the usage had
increased to 69% (Netcraft Web Server Survey, November 2005).

• MySQL

MySQL is a
multithreaded, multi-user, SQL (Structured Query Language) Database Management
System (DBMS) with an estimated six million installations. MySQL AB makes MySQL
available as free software under the GNU General Public License (GPL), but they
also sell it under traditional commercial licensing arrangements for cases where
the intended use is incompatible with use of the GPL.
Unlike projects such as Apache, where the software is developed by a public
community, and the copyright to the codebase is owned by its individual authors,
MySQL is owned and sponsored by a single for-profit firm, the Swedish company
MySQL AB, which holds the copyright to most of the codebase. The company
develops and maintains the system, selling support and service contracts, as
well as commercially-licensed copies of MySQL, and employing people all over the
world who work together via the Internet. Two Swedes and a Finn founded MySQL
AB: David Axmark, Allan Larsson, and Michael "Monty" Widenius.
• Php

PHP, short for "PHP:
Hypertext Preprocessor", is an open-source, reflective programming language used
mainly for developing server-side applications and dynamic web content, and more
recently, other software.
PHP allows interaction with a large number of relational database management
systems, such as MySQL, Oracle, IBM DB2, Microsoft SQL Server, PostgreSQL and
SQLite. PHP runs on most major operating systems, including UNIX, Linux,
Windows, and Mac OS X, and can interact with many major web servers. The
official PHP website contains extensive documentation. The Linux, Apache, MySQL,
PHP (LAMP) architecture has become popular in the Web industry as a way of
deploying inexpensive, reliable, scalable, secure web applications.
PHP is dynamically typed. That is, the rules are not as strict with
variables—they do not have to be declared and they can hold any type of object.
Arrays are heterogenous, meaning a single array can contain objects of more than
one type. There is a command line interface, as well as GUI libraries such as
the Gimp Tool Kit (GTK+) and text mode libraries like Ncurses and Newt.
PHP is the result of the efforts of many contributors. It is licensed under a
BSD-style license, the PHP license. Since version 4, it has been powered by the
Zend engine.
